MASSACHUSETTS OR CONNECTICUT, LATE 18TH CENTURY

The serpentine crestrail with scrolled ears, each with four decorative punch marks, above a seven spindle back over a curved armrail with shaped grips above baluster-turned supports over a D-shaped plank seat, on flaring baluster-turned and cylindrical legs joined by an H-stretcher--45 1/4in. high, 23 1/2in. wide, 15 1/4in. deep

Lot Essay

This elegantly proportioned armchair is embellished with the unusual addition of gouge marks on the ears of the crestrail. A nearly identical comb-back Windsor armchair with the same motif is illustrated in Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America, vol. 2, (Philadelphia, 1987). Other than these two examples, only fan-back Windsor side-chairs are known to exhibit the same decorative punchwork.
