Lot Essay

The carved foliate capitals of the back and the carved flowers that decorate the chair are distinctive characteristics of Salem, Massachusetts. Petal-carved banisters are usually associated with chairs made in New York, however, and illustrate the influence of trade and transfer of design between coastal communities (for New York examples, see Christie's, January 17-18, 1992, lot 405 and a set at Colonial Williamsburg made by Robert Carter.
