GEORGE HIRST 1843, manuscript diary kept by George Hirst on his voyage from Plymouth to Sydney on the Alfred, 99 pages, red calf (spine worn and faded), 8vo
Originally from Mirfield, 3 miles from Dewsbury, Yorkshire, Hirst's diary is a daily manuscript account of life on board the Alfred, commencing earlier on the 27th October 1843 with Hirst's departure from Cooper Bridge Station en route to Normanton, Birmingham, Bristol and finally Plymouth, from where he sails on 1 November 1843. Other passengers on board are Dr. and Mrs. Dawson, Miss Richardson, Miss Balmain, Lt.Lethbridge and his son, Capt. MCKellan, Messrs. Coleman, Smythe, Hardy, Crawford, Bundock, Clements. The monotony of the journey is enlivened by occasional contact with other vessels, such as the American whaler Desdemona, the ceremony of crossing the equator, visit to the island of St. Vincent in Cape Verde. On February 1844 'the coast of New Holland appeared in sight' and the diary ends on 10 February while they are still a few days out of Sydney. Sold with 8 cartes-des-visites by J.
