The morning after the destruction of the Kelly Gang, the Melbourne photographer, Alfred Burman, persuaded the police to hang the stiffened corpse of Joe Byrne before the door of the Benalla Policee Lock-up. Burman's colleage, J.W.Lindt, recorded the scene. The original door is now in the Benalla Historical Society's collection. The present hinge mounts, venillator grills and doorstep are visible in Lindt's photograph (2)
