James J. Giltinan, well known in cricket (he was an umpire) and Horseracing circles was also founder of the NSW Rugby League and one of its first life members. The breakaway code resulted from dissatisfaction by Rugby Union players with conditions particularly non-compensation for injuries, causing financial stress. Matters came to a head in 1907 when top forward Alec Burdon was badly injured and not compensated for medical costs and loss of earnings. The famous meeting followed in the room above Victor Trumper's Spoerts Goods store. He became first secretary of the NSW Rugby League and organised the first Kangaroo tour of England in 1908-9. Giltinan and Trumper outfitted the team. When Don Bradman scored his 340 not out against Victoria in 1928 Giltinan presented him with an honour cap. Giltinan died in 1950 and the Rugby League Premiership trophy shield is named after him; sold with Giltinan's gold life Member's medallion; NSW Rugby League Members medallion 1949; gold medallion engraved 'Australian, England team', presented from the members to J. J. Giltinan (Manager) tour 1908-9; gold gong engraved 'S.A.A.C. May 1885, 2 miles walking, 2nd prize, won by G. Giltinan; copy of a photograph of Giltinan
