AUSTRALIAN TEST CAPTAIN'S BAGGY GREEN
Arthur Lindsay Hassett was born in Geelong in 1913 and became a star sportsman at Geelong College. In 1930-31 while still at school he made 147 for Victorian Country against the touring West Indies side. He was in the 1938 team under Bradman, averaging 53.16 for the tour. He was a gunner in the 2/2 Anti-Aircraft Regiment in Egypt in 1941 and captained the AIF side which did much to restore cricket following the war. Part of the 1948 Invincibles he averaged 44 in the Tests. In 1950 he took over as captain from Don Bradman. The England team, captained by 'Bulldog' Freddie Brown, included Len Hutton, Dennis Compton, David Sheppard, Brian Statham, Australia won the first Test at Brisbane by 70 runs; the second, a thriller, at Melbourne by 28 runs; the third at Sydney by an innings and 13; the fourth at Adelaide by 274 runs; and lost the fifth at Melbourne by 8 wickets. Australia had won 8 of the first 9 Test it had played under Hassett's captaincy. At the end of the series Hassett and Brown exchanged caps
