ASHES REGAINED 1982-83, Sydney Cricket Ground, fifth Test 2-7 January 1983, original stump inscribed by Chappell in green ink around top of wicket '5th Fest 1982/83 Ashes regained' Australia won back the Ashes when this fifth Test was drawn at the SCG.  Kim Hughes scored 137 in Australia's second innings.  English cricket officials would not permit the actual Ashes to travel from Lord's.  The Australian decided to produce their own version by burning one of the bails in the dressing rooms and placing its ashes in an urn, inscribed 'The Ashes.  English cricket dies again.  Fondly accepted by Greg Chappell and Co. at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 7, 1983'. Subsequently, Chappell had the stump split, hinged and signed by 11 players each of the Australian and England Centenary Test 1977 teams, including Greg Chappell, Marsh, Walters, Lilee, Greig, Brearley, Willis and others
