1916 MOON 6-30 TOURING

Engine: six cylinder Continental, 224ci., 24½hp; Gearbox: three-speed; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear; Brakes: rear wheel drum. Left hand drive.
Joseph W. Moon was one of five farming brothers who, at the age of twenty-one, was given a horse, a saddle and bridle and told to make his own place in the world. Joseph Moon made his way to St. Louis, Missouri where he set himself up in the Buggy business and in 1905 he introduced his first car, a Model A four cylinder 30/35hp model promoted as 'The Ideal American Car'. Four cylinders were replaced by six cylinders in 1913 and the new car was called the 38hp Tourer and that configuration remained thereafter. The Moon was, in fact, an assembled car using Falls and Continental engines and other proprietary components. The assembly produced a high quality, refined motor car.
This particular example was donated to the San Antonio Museum Association's Transport Collection by Liston Zander in 1960 where it remained until Christie's sold some of the collection at Pebble Beach in August 1994. At that time the Moon was described as having had some restoration done to it between 1954 and 1957 and as being in fair condition. The brightwork was replated in chrome instead of the original nickel for ease of maintenance.
The current owner purchased the car from the Christie's sale in 1994 to add to his large collection of interesting and esoteric vehicles and it has lived in storage in Pebble Beach ever since. The starter has been rebuilt and by the time of sale it is hoped the car will be up and running again. After some recommissioning, it should be ready for a new owner to enjoy.
