This bronze is copied from a group originially commissioned by King Attalus I of Pergamon to comemmorate his successful rebuttals of the Gaulish incursions. The Gauls had invaded Pergamon from another area of Asia Minor that was then known as Galatia, (their territories having no link with the Gaul of Europe that is now known as France.)
Pergamon, as an ally of the expanding Rome became the most influential state in the area. The kingdom was bequeathed to the Roman people on the death of the childless King Attalus III.
