Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel J.T. Sleep (1837-1924) joined the Victorian Volunteers in 1860 and rose to the rank of Major and Commander of the 3rd Ballaarat Volunteer Rangers. With the formation of the militia in 1873 he became Commanding Officer of the 1st Ballaarat Rifle Corps.
This medal was awarded at the first presentation of Long and Efficient Service medals on 27 January 1881. Eleven members of the Ballaarat Corps received the medal.
Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1885, he retired in 1894 and died on 12 May 1924.
