Lot Essay

The Melbourne Volunteers were formed in response to the outbreak of the Crimean War. Many of the British troops defending Australia were withdrawn for immediate war service. By an Act of Parliament the Victorian Government authorized the raising of a Volunteer corps in November 1854 (Volunteers Act 1854) under the command of Inspecting Field Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Valiant, Lieutenant-Colonel Anderson and Major Hodgson. Within a month 120 men volunteered for service and attended regular drills at the Princes Bridge Barracks and later at the Exhibition Buildings.
Captain Orr was an officer with the Melbourne Volunteers until it was reformed as the Victorian Volunteer Rifle Regiment in 1856. He was a merchant operating at 71 Flinders Lane West.
