Christie's charges a Buyer's premium calculated at… 顯示更多 Willem Bastiaan Tholen was born in Amsterdam on February 13 1860 and was raised in Kampen. He grew up in an artistic environment with his father taking him along on trips through the countryside of Kampen and acquainting him with plein-air painting. As a young boy Tholen received his first artistic training - together with his vriend Jan Voerman - from J.D. Belmer (1827-1909). On whose advise he went to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he also met Willy Martens, Piet Meinders, Anthon van Rappard, Willem Witsen and Nicolaas Bastert. In the beginning of his carrier Tholen was strongly influenced is collegues of The Hague School, but eventually developed an individual and caracteristic style. His work is characterized by it's very atmospheric and impressionistic style and his distinct palette. He gave his own interpretation of painting the Dutch landscape and tried to represent his impressions of the direct influence of nature. After 1885, Tholen spent many summers with his friend Willem Witsen in his country house 'Ewijckshoeve' in Soestdijk. Lot 120 contains some drawings Tholen made during one of his stays on the Ewijckshoeve.
