Christie's charges a Buyer's premium calculated at… Read more Oscar Mendlik was born in Hungary in 1871, and entered the Drawing Academy of Boedapest where he received training from B.S. von Adamos. The artist passed his exams with honours and proceeded to give lessons at the 'Masterschool of fresco painting'.In the spring of 1891, at the age of twenty, Mendlik saw the sea for the first time in his life. During the following holidays the artist travelled to the coast to paint seascapes with and without boats. In 1899 the artist moved to Rome and for the first time painted a marine without coast or further details. In 1900 the artist moved to Holland and settled in the coastal town of Scheveningen in 1901. Mendlik became inspired by the work of Hague School artists and became acquainted with amongst others G.H. Breitner and M. Bauer. Besides portraits Mendlik's artistic oeuvre would mainly consist of marines for which the artist gained inspiration on his many sailing expeditions to for example Port Saïd in 1914 and the West Indies in 1939.
