Lot Essay

Probably a copy after a lost original by Frans van Mieris I; compare with the painting of a Boy blowing bubbles in the Mauritshuis, The Hague (see O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris, 1981, I, pp.70/1, no.58, figs. 58-58a) in which the same ivy-covered feigned stone window, the birdcage upper right and the woman on the left occur.
