The composition follows the engraving from 1604 by Nicolaes de Bruyn (M.Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, 1993, I, pp.115-8, no.70, II, fig.119). No painted prototype exists. The popularity of the composition becomes evident from the numerous painted and printed copies, of which a selection has been published by Roethlisberger, op.cit., pp.117/8.
