Lot Essay

Mary Auras was the companion to Sir John Lavery's daughter Eileen, and probably met Crawhall in Tangier, when she was staying at the Laverys' villa in the 1880s. While visiting Tangier she met Nigel d'Albini Black-Hawkins, whom she later married. Crawhall gave her many of his drawings, and similar drawings of ducks are in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow
