Lot Essay

Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), artist and book illustrator, was commissioned by Wedgwood to create several designs for table-wares during the 1930's, the last being created in 1940. Cf. Robin Reilly and George Savage, The Dictionary of Wedgwood, Woodbridge, 1980, p. 296 for a similar mug designed for the Coronation of Edward VIII in 1937, which was never issued. The design was adapted for the Coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II
