Sold with a Certificate by Lynne Thornton, dated 12 May 1993
To be included in Ilene Susan Fort's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Bridgman who, in a letter dated February 1, 1995, states 'Although the painting is not dated, it was definitely created in the late 1870s. The style and subject matter demonstrate the strong influence of Jean-Léon Gérôme on Bridgman. By 1880 that influence was waning. The painting is a stunning example of the theme of Eastern couples that Bridgman painted often during the 1870s. Fraught with sexual tension, these couple images are usually set in dark interiors or alleys. The inuendoes of this particular painting are more blatant than usual in Bridgman's scenes.'
We are grateful to Ilene Susan Fort, Curator, American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
