In 1921, David Jones was received into the Roman Catholic Church. In the summer of the same year he joined Eric Gill's Catholic community at Ditchling in Sussex with Desmond Chute and Hilary Pepler. Here he was taught wood-engraving by Desmond Chute and he produced illustrations for books published by the St. Dominic Press at Ditchling
