Sayagaki on the shirasaya by Dr. Sato Kanzan.
With N.B.T.H.K. certificate no. 7300.
The blade is in the style of the Sadamune utsushi blade made by the Yasutsugu school.
The umetada school was founded in Kyoto by Umetada Myoju in the early 17th century, and is mainly famous for its sword fittings, their blades being rarely encountered. The sayagaki dates the blade to the Kanei period (1624-1643), the Nihonto Meikan suggests the Empo period (1673-1680) but does not list any dated blades. Nothing else is known of Mitsusada but on the evidence of this blade he was a highly skilled swordsmith and carver.
