A GERMAN FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN with shortened two-stage sighted barrel, octagonal breech with later chiselled panels running foliage against a gilt stippled ground, tang en suite, bevelled lock finely chiselled in bas-relief with rococo ornament against gilt stippled ground, cock en suite, walnut half-stock (reduced) carved with scrolling foliage in relief and inlaid with a white and dark horn star on the cheek-piece, gilt-brass mounts cast and chased in low relief with rococo ornament on a stippled ground, the side-plate and trigger-guard with a stag and a hind in a landscape, and the butt-plate with a female falconer on horseback, a portrait medallion above, patch-box cover with gilt-brass plaque cast and chased with foliage, and fore-end cap en suite (restocked and partly remounted during the gun's working life, gilding worn overall, ramrod missing), mid-18th Century
