the well cast elaborate case emblematic of learning with flanking female bronze figures one holding a book the other a gilt and bronze globe and seated on foliate cast volutes supported on a rectuangular plinth with outset front applied with a musical trophy, the plinth on foliate toupie feet, the altar pediment with rams' head supports and surmounted by a gadrooned and foliate-cast bronze urn with swan handles, the rear door plate with dedication inscription Made for Vice Admiral and Mrs Popham, Cardean. N.B. 1865, bronze entrelac bezel to the white enamel Roman dial signed Klaftenberger Regent Street London with blued moon hands, the five pillar triple chain fusee movement chiming on eight bells with hour strike on gong, plain brass balance to the gilt lever platform with regulation above the dial, similarly signed plain backplate

The movement of this clock is undoubtedly high quality Victorian work and the case although of distinct French design is of unusual construction and high quality indicating that it could possibly be of English manufacture.
