Lot Essay

The parlour-chair with fret-ribband splat formed as rusticated cluster-pilasters with cusped arcading and acanthus-enrichments typifies the picturesque 'Gothick' style popularised by the editions of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754-63. The pilaster with bifurcated aperture featured in his 1763 edition, pl. XVI.
A pair of related armchairs, with the same pattern crest-rail to that on the left, was sold by Mrs E. Guy Ridpath, in these Rooms, 30 March 1930, lot 295.
