These metamorphic library-steps are designed in the early 19th Century French/antique manner popularised by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. Its form evolved from the celebrated Harewood House library-stool/steps supplied in 1771 by Thomas Chippendale (d.1778), while its pilasters relate to those of the Carlton House desk designed in 1811 for George, Prince Regent, later King George IV by Thomas Tatham (d.1818) of Messrs. Tatham, Bailey and Saunders, cabinet-makers of Mount Street
