Lot Essay

A. Hepplwwhite & Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pls. 1 and 21, featured a chair with the Prince of Wales's feather-badge together with this pattern of flower-voluted arm on a multi-shield-back settee. This actual pattern of chair-back with veil-festooned and ribbon-tied feathers corresponds closely to a design of 1788 in the Estimate Books of Messrs. Gillows of London and Lancaster. A related armchair is illustrated M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 5
