Lot Essay

Ferdinand (1810-1842), Duc de Chartres, was born during the exile of his parents in Palermo where his grand-father King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon-Naples and his court had fled from Napoleon's troops. The representation of the young prince protected by the thornbush and next to the Bourbon lily symbolizes his role as heir to the throne. However, Ferdinand, who became Duc d'Orléans after his father's accession to the French throne in 1830, died in a carriage accident, aged 32.
