Provenance
The presence of this special exemption mark would emphasise this tureen and presumably the pair of wine-coolers to be Royal diplomatic gifts to Prince Francesco Pignatelli or purchased during his stay in Paris as Ambassador of Naples till 1785.
Literature
The décharge on the pieces (a crown) is given by Nocq (vol IV, p. 240) as the mark used for pieces exempt from tax. Emile Beuque (vol II, 3294) goes further and indicates that the mark was used specifically for Royal gifts.
The design of the tureen may be by Jean-Démosthène Dugourc, and the frieze adapted from an engraving by Stefano della Bella.
