Charles, Duke of Södermanland, was Regent of Sweden 1792 - 1796 during the minority of this nephew Charles IV Gustav (see lot 247). After the abdication of the latter in 1809, he became King of Sweden as Charles XIII and King of Norway in 1814. He was the last Swedish King of the House of Holstein-Gottorp, his adopted son Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, Prince of Ponte-Corvo introducing the House of Bernadotte to the Swedish throne in 1818.
