Three versions are listed by Georges Marlier, Pierre Brueghel le jeune, Brussels, 1969, p. 441. According to Jacqueline Folie in ibid., p. 440, Marlier regarded all the versions of the present composition known to him as replicas by Pieter Brueghel III of an untraced original by Pieter Brueghel II. A version with prominent pentimenti which seem to establish it as the prime original, was sold in these Rooms, 11 December 1987, lot 6, as Pieter Brueghel II.
