Lot Essay

The Renaissance style is restricted in Fabergé's oeuvre to a small number of showpieces. They include his Renaissance Egg presented by Alexander III to his wife Maria Feodorovna in 1894 (Forbes Collection, New York) identified as a copy of an 18th Century Renaissance-style casket by the Amsterdam goldsmith Le Roy (Grünes Gewölbe, Dresden), the gold-mounted jewelled and enamelled rock-crystal vase presented by Leopold de Rothschild to Queen Mary (Collection of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II), and the Dutch Royal presentation tray sold at Christie's, Geneva, 12 May 1980. Similar in style to that of his western competitors, especially R. Vaster, Fabergé's Renaissance revivals are all the product of his main workmaster Michael Perchin (1886-1903)
