Lot Essay

A typical, high quality product of Rubens's studio working from a lost modello made in preparation for the picture at Marseilles, which Rubens had painted c. 1617 for the Duke of Bavaria (1573-1651) (see A. Balis, Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, Part XVIII, Hunting Landscapes and Hunting Scenes, II, Hunting Scenes, New York, pp. 111-18 (including his no. 4). This copy was probably executed c. 1618-20; it shows more to the right than the Marseilles picture, but as other copies do also, it seems likely that the Marseilles picture has been cut as Balis proposes. Balis, (op. cit., p. 113), lists at least eight painted copies; the sizes of none of these accord with those of the present lot.
