Lot Essay
The Archeological and classical styles are represented with the wired motifs and scrolled ornaments, so well illustrated in this pendant, that influenced many craftsmen in the mid 19th century.
One of the most respected jewellers in the revivalist period was Eugène Fontenay (1823-1887). He most succesfully came to terms with Etruscan techniques of filgree ornament and granulation, and was appreciated by Boucheron, who retailed several pieces by him.
An example can be found with an attributed revivalist necklace in the Hull Grundy Gift of the British Museum, and another sold at Christie's, London, 12 March 1986, Lot 307.
