Lot Essay

Leprince made a series of cartoons illustrating the Jeux Russiens which were woven into a series of six tapestries at Beauvais c. 1767. The present picture is a cartoon for the figure of the danseuse in La Danse. Versions of the tapestries are in the Musée de la Tapisserie at Aix-en-Provence and in the Tuck Collection in the Petit Palais, Paris.

The ribbon and bird appear to have been added at a later date.

We are grateful to Mary-Elizabeth Hellyer for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
