Based on an invention by Ribera known in several versions, one of which is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see A. Pérez Sánchez and N. Spinosa, L'opera completa di Ribera, Milan, 1978, p. 127, no. 234-8). A version, attributed by Professor Nicola Spinosa to Luca Giordano, was with Harari and Johns Ltd., London (see the catalogue of the exhibition, Pinturas de Antiguos Maestros, Museo de San Carlos, Mexico City, 28 April-9 May 1993 and Museo de Monterrey, 13-23 May 1993, no. 14).
