In 1853, and again in 1855, Maxime David exhibited in the Paris Salon: "Trois portraits, miniature, d'Abd-el-Kader, représenté sous des aspects différents".
Abd-el-Kader (1807-1883), Algerian Emir. From 1832 to 1847, he and his troops struggled against the French occupation of Algeria, but finally, he was imprisoned in France. In 1852, he was released due to Napoleon III who later decorated him with the Order of the Légion d'Honneur.
