Lot Essay

Princess Marie-Thérèse of France (1778-1850), daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette (see lots 183 and 210). After the execution of her parents, she remained in captivity until 1795 when she was exchanged by her uncle Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire (see lot 126) against french prisoners. Upon her arrival in Vienna, she was painted by Füger several times and her portraits were sent to french royalists in all Europe.
