Lot Essay

Barnabé Sageret became a master goldsmith following Louis XV's permission for the duc d'Orléans to have two goldsmiths in his household. He registered his mark in 1731 and died at the age of 70 in 1758. His son Charles-Barnabé registered his mark in 1752 and seems to have worked until at least 1791. The famous Sageret workshop supplied the Menus-Plaisirs du Roi with a large variety of gold boxes from 1756 until 1778, including those for the corbeille de mariage of the comtesse de Provence in 1771.
