Giuseppe Balsamo, called Count de Cagliostro (1743-1795?), celebrated charlatan and institutor of an Egyptian Masonry, as shown in the present miniature. He came to Paris in 1785, and his implication in the Affaire du Collier caused his imprisonment in the Bastille and his exile one year later. In 1789, he was arrested in Rome and condemned to death by the Inquisition, for reason of his free-masonic activities. Nevertheless, the judgment was reduced to a life sentence and Cagliostro probably died in his Roman prison.
