Lot Essay

The present lot would seem to be an addition to the recorded pieces that have survived from this service, almost certainly made to celebrate the 35th birthday of Clemens August, the Archbishop Elector of Cologne. A list of the hitherto known pieces of this service was published in Arthur Müller, 'das Meissner Höroldt-service für Clemens August, Kurfurst von Köln', Keramos, July 1958, pl. 27. A teabowl and saucer from this service sold in these Rooms, 10 November 1986, lot 181
