AN 18K GOLD TUBOGAS CHOKER NECKLACE

Designed as three rows of flattened tubogas chain, circa 1960, 32.0 cm.

Signed by Bulgari

The ingenious and supple "Tobo-gas" workmanship enables the gold to flex and to roll up like a spring smoothly enlancing on the wrist or the neck.

The attribution of its invention is somewhat controverse in as much as certain Egyptian necklaces surely inspired the jewellery designers of the thirties. Nonetheless it can be asserted that the rings with the pear-shaped terminal stone and the wristwatches "Tubo-gas" immediately bring to mind the name of Bulgari.

The realization of a Bulgari "Tubo-gas" object is always hand-made. Two metal threads (gold and steel) are rolled around a wooden form. Once the desired length has been obtained, the inner wooden part is pulled out and substituted with a suttle gold spring. The gold spring lends the stability to the exceptional elasticity of the manufacture, leaving the object slightly hollow inside, and hence named "Tobo-gas", meaning "gas-hose".
