Brown was mainly a flower painter. He was a member of the Incorporated Society and exhibited there and at the Royal Academy from 1766-1791. In 1776 he published Nouvelles Illustrations de Zoologie, 1776. He was appointed Botanical Painter to the Prince of Wales
