Lot Essay

Underwood began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from the age of seventeen and continued to exhibit there until 1801. Like Girtin and Turner, he worked for Dr. Thomas Monro (1759-1833) and he was among the original members of Girtin's Sketching Club. Another example of his work 'The Gateway to Battle Abbey, Kent was sold in these Rooms, 30 March 1993, lot 36 (#1,175)
