Lot Essay

The Thames at Chiswick was one of John Varley's favourite subjects, focusing upon the tower of St. Nicholas in the distance. The first known drawing dates from 1813 and was used for a finished watercolour of 1814, and there are further watercolours dating into the 1830s. This example seems to be unique in showing the windmill on the right
