Lot Essay
Callow produced a number of drawings of the Pont Royal in the 1830s during a prolonged residence in Paris. A sketchbook in the Victoria and Albert Museum contains a pencil drawing of 1831, and a drawing in the same collection of 1837 was used for a finished watercolour of 1839 sold at Sotheby's 14 March 1925, lot 100, repr. This watercolour of 1837 is taken from a somewhat higher viewpoint, accentuating the towers of Notre Dame on the horizon
