This watercolour is one of four produced to be engraved for The Keepsake, three for the issue of 1836, this example for that of 1837 (see Piggott, op.cit., p.100). It is a homage to the British navy under fire, and illustrates an incident in the story by Lord Nugent about the death of a gallant young Lieutenant; the warships are described as a 'grand epitome of beauty, confidence and strength'
