Lot Essay

Cox visited Wales in 1805, 1806 and 1818. In 1841 he returned to Birmingham, where he lived for the rest of his life, sketching each summer in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and North Wales. In 1844 Cox stayed with the artist Harry John Johnson (1826-1884) at Bettwys-y-Coed and from then on painted almost exclusively in Wales
