Lot Essay

On 27 March 1848 Lear wrote to his sister it becomes all purple & gold, which it is difficult to tear one'sself from. Thus-climate & beauty of atmosphere regain their hold on the mind-pen-& pencil' (see Vivien Noakes, Edward Lear, 1985, p.104)
