A PAIR OF RARE GERMAN SILVER-GILT MEDICINE BOXES
maker's mark of Tobias Kicklinger, Augsburg, 1610-1615

Each slightly tapering cylindrical and with moulded lip and detachable slightly domed covers with stud finials, the bodies applied with horned lion masks with drop rings, hung with beading, marked on bases, the bodies and covers numbered 1 and 2 - 6cm. (2 3/8in.) high

Lot Essay

Another pair of this rare form was included in the celebrated "Pemmersche Kunstschrank" made in 1610-1617 in Augsburg for Duke Philipp II of Pomerania. This pair, by Nikolaus I Kolb, Augsburg, 1615-1616, is now in the Kunstgewerbe Museum in Berlin, illustrated in H. Seeling, Die Kunst der Augsburger Goldschmiede 1529-1868, Munich, 1980, vol. II, no. 232
