A FINE LOUIS XV GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Pierre-François Delafons, Paris, 1745/1746, with the charge and discharge of Antoine Leschaudel

Rectangular box with slighty domed lid and concave sides, finely chased overall around with imaginary exotic plants against a ground of undulating bands of reeded waves, the cover furthermore chased with a snake, a bird and a butterfly, the base with exotic huts, a crane and a tree -- 68 mm wide, slightly worn.

Snuff-boxes by this famous Parisian goldsmith are to be found in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, in the Hermitage, Saint-Peterburg, and in the Louvre; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, owns the celebrated Château de Chanteloup box from the Wrightsman Collection.
