Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples, wearing a white lace cap, a triple pearl necklace and a white frill-edged lavender-blue dress; oval -- 54 mm high, silver frame set with blue-foiled glass stones, with glazed silk reverse.

Lot Essay

Maria Carolina of Habsburg (1752-1814), daughter of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Franz Stephan, was married to Ferdinand IV, King of Naples (see lot 344), in 1768. Only nine of their numberless children survived beyond early childhood. A sister of Queen Marie-Antoinette of France (see lot 360), she was a fierce ennemy of the French Revolution and of Napoleon Bonaparte.
